01Why study in China?Academic range, scholarship variety, infrastructure and affordability.+

China combines scale, academic choice and scholarship opportunity

China has become one of the major destinations for international higher education. Students can access Chinese-language and English-taught programmes across engineering, technology, medicine, business, economics, science and many other fields.

Peking University campus scenery Peking University
Large university network

Hundreds of institutions host international students across a wide range of academic levels and majors.

Multiple scholarship routes

Government, provincial, municipal and university scholarships can reduce or fully cover major study costs.

Campus accommodation

University dormitories can be considerably more affordable than private housing in many global study destinations.

Plan by profile, not by country name alone

The right Chinese university depends on your major, grades, language, budget, scholarship target, city preference and admission requirements.

02How study routes in China workLanguage, bachelor, master and doctoral study.+

Main routes international students use

Do not compare tuition alone

Housing, transport, food, climate, city size and international-student services all affect the final experience.

05Scholarship routes in ChinaGovernment, provincial, municipal and university funding.+

China has several scholarship layers

Chinese Government Scholarship

The CSC route can provide full scholarship benefits including tuition, accommodation, insurance and stipend.

Provincial Scholarships

Funding created by provinces for selected universities and international applicants.

Municipal Scholarships

City-level funding may support tuition, accommodation or fixed annual grants.

University Scholarships

Institution-funded awards can range from full support to tuition-only or partial discounts.

Scholarship names do not always tell you the exact coverage. Always verify the benefits, duration, renewal rules and any GPA or attendance conditions.

06Chinese Government Scholarship — CSCCoverage, stipend levels and selection logic.+

CSC is one of China’s best-known international scholarship programmes

¥2,500
Bachelor stipend

Typical monthly living allowance under a full CSC structure.

¥3,000
Master stipend

Typical monthly living allowance under a full CSC structure.

¥3,500
PhD stipend

Typical monthly living allowance under a full CSC structure.

✓Tuition coverage
✓University accommodation or applicable housing support
✓Comprehensive medical insurance
✓Monthly living allowance
Competitive does not mean impossible

Eligibility does not guarantee selection. Academic performance, document quality, language level, university choice, quota and competition all influence the result.

07Provincial and municipal scholarshipsStrong alternatives to national government funding.+

Coverage differs greatly from one programme to another

Possible full coverage

Tuition, accommodation, medical insurance and sometimes a living allowance.

Possible partial coverage

Tuition only, tuition plus housing, a fixed annual grant, or a percentage discount.

Type A / B / C labels are not nationally standardized

Two universities can use the same label for very different scholarship benefits. Read the actual award conditions.

08University scholarshipsCommon structures for bachelor and postgraduate students.+

University scholarships are among the most practical routes for many students

Tuition + Accommodation

A strong undergraduate structure where major academic and housing costs are waived.

Tuition Only

The university waives tuition while the student pays dormitory, living and personal costs.

Partial Scholarship

The university reduces tuition and/or housing, leaving a remaining annual contribution.

For some undergraduate programmes, tuition and university accommodation together may be around RMB 18,000–30,000 per year before scholarship. Under certain partial awards, the remaining amount can be substantially lower. These are examples rather than fixed national prices.

Postgraduate awards

Some master and PhD university scholarships cover tuition and accommodation and may also include a monthly stipend. Actual benefits vary by institution and scholarship category.

09CSCA for bachelor applicantsWhat it is, common subjects and why planning matters.+

CSCA is an important undergraduate academic assessment

The China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) is used to help universities evaluate whether international applicants have the academic foundation needed for bachelor-level study.

Business & Management

Mathematics is commonly a principal academic subject.

Engineering & STEM

Mathematics plus Physics or Chemistry may be required depending on the major.

Medical & Health

Mathematics plus Chemistry, Physics or another combination may be requested.

Chinese-taught programmes

Professional Chinese may be added to academic subject requirements.

¥450
One subject

Current registration example from the source material.

¥700
Two or more subjects

Current registration example from the source material.

Do not choose subjects from the major name alone

Always check the exact university and programme. Two engineering programmes can require different CSCA subject combinations.

10Study and living cost planningWhat students should budget beyond the scholarship.+

Even scholarship students should prepare a complete budget

Administrative costs

Application fees, medical examination, residence permit and document processing.

Study & housing costs

Dormitory deposit, utilities, books, supplies and any costs not covered by the scholarship.

Personal expenses

Food, local transport, flights, phone, clothing and day-to-day spending.

Scholarship coverage is not the same as zero cost

Students should understand exactly what is included before accepting an offer.

13Bachelor scholarship planningWhat undergraduate applicants should understand early.+

Undergraduate funding is often structured differently from postgraduate funding

Tuition + dormitory

A common strong university-scholarship model for bachelor applicants.

Tuition only

The student pays housing and personal costs.

Partial support

The student pays a reduced amount of tuition and/or accommodation.

Bachelor applicants should also prepare for CSCA where required and should check whether the scholarship renews automatically or depends on annual academic performance.

14Master & PhD scholarship planningResearch profile, study plan and supervisor considerations.+

Graduate applications need stronger academic alignment

✓Relevant previous degree and transcript
✓Well-prepared study plan or research proposal
✓Two academic recommendations where required
✓Language evidence matching the programme
✓Supervisor acceptance where applicable
✓Research papers or achievements for stronger PhD profiles
Funding can be stronger at postgraduate level

Some master and PhD routes include tuition, accommodation and stipend, but the exact package varies by university and scholarship.

15Common application mistakesSmall errors that can weaken an otherwise good file.+

Avoid preventable problems

Applying randomly

Submitting to universities without checking academic fit or scholarship conditions.

Ignoring CSCA

Undergraduate applicants may miss an important entrance requirement.

Assuming all scholarships are full

Many university awards are tuition-only or partial.

Weak document consistency

Name, dates or education history do not match across documents.

Generic study plan

Graduate applicants submit broad statements with weak academic alignment.

Starting too late

Late preparation reduces university choice and scholarship options.
